In Werkasakaro, in Yirgacheffe’s region, Ayele Fulasa cultivates his coffee the way his family always has, and the knowledge that shapes his cultivation and processing has been handed down through generations. He inherited 4 hectares from his father, then added 3 more, earned through the profits of his own harvests.

Yirgacheffe is a district in southern Ethiopia and is widely recognized as one of coffee’s “birth regions.” Cultivation here remains largely traditional: coffee grows as part of an integrated “coffee garden,” intercropped with other food crops and woven into the landscape rather than set apartfrom it.

This coffee is part of the Lalisaa Project. In the Oromo language, Lalisaa means “to grow, flourish, or blossom”. It supports independent Ethiopian smallholders with resource management, agroforestry education, and structural processing infrastructure, helping them maximize the premium value of their crops.

For this lot, only ripe cherries are handpicked, then dried whole on raised bamboo beds for two to three weeks.
